The Municipality of South Huron is reminding everyone how to safely use the new pedestrian crossover on Main Street in Exeter, near MacNaughton Park.
The reminder was posted on the municipality’s Facebook page and outlines some important rules for both drivers and pedestrians.
Drivers, including cyclists, must stop and wait for pedestrians to completely cross the road before proceeding. This applies whether or not the lights at the crossover are flashing. It’s the law, and those who don’t stop can face a fine of up to $1,000 and four demerit points.
Pedestrians also have a role to play. They should only cross when it’s safe to do so and always press the button to activate the flashing lights before stepping onto the road.
The pedestrian crossover in Exeter is a “Type B” style, which includes pavement markings, overhead signs, push buttons with flashing beacons, and side-mounted signs reminding drivers to stop for pedestrians.
South Huron says crossovers like this help make roads safer and more accessible for everyone. They improve safety by clearly marking where pedestrians should cross and alerting drivers to slow down. They also help people using wheelchairs, walkers, or mobility aids cross more easily and safely.
Crossovers encourage people to walk more, reduce vehicle traffic, and help connect neighbourhoods with local parks, schools, and businesses. They even help the environment by cutting down on car use and reducing pollution.
