If you go swimming in a lake this summer and feel a sharp pinch on your toe, it might be a giant water bug
These big bugs, called Lethocerus americanus, live in southern Canada and parts of the U.S. You can find them in places like Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, and Nova Scotia.
Giant water bugs are about 5 to 6 cm long, making them the biggest water insects in Canada. They are flat, brown, and good at swimming. You can usually see them from June to November. In winter, they hide in mud or plant debris.
They love being in or near water, so you might find them in ponds, lakes, marshes, and even backyard pools. They eat small fish, tadpoles, snails, salamanders, and frogs.
While they don’t usually attack, they can bite if they feel scared, like if you try to pick one up. Their bite can hurt a lot and cause a burning feeling and swelling.
Be careful when swimming or relaxing near water this summer because you never know what might be hiding under the surface!
