As planting and harvesting season continues across the region, OPP is reminding motorists to exercise caution and patience when sharing the road with farm vehicles.
Farm equipment is expected to be more visible on rural roadways throughout the season, often travelling at speeds below 40 km/h. Police advise drivers to watch for the orange triangular signs displayed on slow-moving vehicles and to adjust their speed accordingly.
Motorists are also reminded that farm machinery may be wider than a standard lane or carry attachments that extend beyond the vehicle. This can make passing more dangerous, particularly on narrow or winding roads.
In addition, not all farm vehicles are equipped with traditional turn signals. Operators may use hand signals or need to veer in one direction before making a turn in the opposite direction. For example, a tractor swinging to the right may be preparing to turn left.
Police stress the importance of passing only when it is completely safe to do so, never on hills, curves, or in unclear conditions. Once it is safe to pass, drivers should maintain their speed and avoid cutting directly in front of the farm equipment. Due to their size and weight, these vehicles cannot stop as quickly as passenger vehicles.
The OPP encourages all drivers to remain alert, respect the space needed by agricultural vehicles, and help ensure a safe road environment for both farmers and motorists during this busy time of year.
