A heat warning has been issued for Exeter, Goderich, Bluewater and Southern Huron County as dangerously hot and humid weather is expected to begin on Sunday afternoon and continue into the week.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning that this will be the first major heat event of the season. Daytime temperatures could reach between 31 to 36°C, with the humidex making it feel more like 40 to 45°C. Overnight lows will stay high as well, between 21 and 25°C, meaning little relief even at night.
The heat is expected to last until Tuesday night, but there is a chance it could continue into Wednesday, depending on how far south a cold front travels.
Health officials are asking everyone to take the heat seriously. Extreme heat can affect anyone, but it is especially dangerous for older adults, young children, and people with certain health conditions. People are urged to check in on vulnerable neighbours, friends, and family several times a day.
If you start feeling symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, or extreme thirst, it could be the early signs of heat exhaustion. You should stop your activity, drink water, and move to a cooler place.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If someone has red, hot skin, confusion, or faints, call 911 immediately and try to cool them down while you wait for help.
To stay safe, drink plenty of water, stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, and wear light, loose clothing and a hat if you go outside. Close your blinds and use fans or air conditioning if available. If your home is too hot, go to a cooler public place like a library, community centre, or shaded park.
Never leave anyone or any pet inside a parked car, even for a short time.
