A heat warning remains in place today for Exeter, Goderich, Bluewater, and Southern Huron County as the first major heat wave of the season continues.
Starting Sunday afternoon, temperatures have been climbing between 31 and 36 degrees Celsius, with humidex values making it feel closer to 45. Overnight lows are staying between 21 and 25 degrees, offering very little relief from the heat. These extreme conditions are expected to last until Tuesday night, and possibly into Wednesday if the forecasted cold front doesn’t reach the area.
The heat can be dangerous, especially for seniors, people living alone, and anyone with a chronic illness. It’s important to check on those at higher risk, stay hydrated, and try to keep cool.
Signs of heat exhaustion include headache, dizziness, nausea, dark urine, and feeling extremely tired. If you notice any of these signs, stop what you’re doing, move to a cooler place, and drink water.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If someone has red, hot skin, confusion, or faints, call 911 right away. While waiting for help, try to cool them down with cold water or ice packs and remove any extra clothing.
To stay safe, drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. Keep blinds or shades closed and use fans or air conditioning if you can. If your home is too hot, visit a cooling centre, library, or shaded park. Avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day and wear light clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
Also, never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a short time.
Stay safe and stay cool as this heat wave continues.
