United Way Perth-Huron (UWPH) is asking local residents to speak up about the need for affordable housing. A new petition on the United Way website calls on the federal and provincial governments to invest in more community housing across the region.
Most community housing in Perth-Huron is run by the County of Huron and the City of Stratford. These units were built mainly in the 1960s and ’70s, and wait times to get one can take years. Despite the growing need, very little new housing has been built in recent decades.
The petition is addressed to Canada’s Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Gregor Robertson, and Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Rob Flack. It urges both governments to make large investments in new housing and ensure rural areas like Perth-Huron are included.
Signatures will be collected through summer and fall before being delivered to the ministers and local representatives.
More details, including how to sign, are available at perthhuron.unitedway.ca/speakupforhousing.
