The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Exeter is getting ready for Remembrance Day with several events to honour Canada’s veterans and those currently serving. Legion President Barb Willard says the first event will take place on November 9th.
Main Street will be closed for the event as cadets and community groups join in the parade to pay their respects. Willard told myFM November 11th will be a busy day for the legion.
Each school holds a small ceremony or presentation to mark the day. In addition, the Legion will host a Remembrance Day dinner.
Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the Legion branch. Doors open at 5:30pm.
The annual Poppy Campaign has also begun. Willard explained that poppies are available at local stores and businesses through Legion volunteers.
The Legion also runs a youth education program that encourages students to take part in art and poetry contests about remembrance. Local schools participate each year, with entries judged by students at South Huron District High School. Willard said all the work done by the Legion is through volunteers.
Those interested in joining the Legion can stop by the Exeter branch or visit Legion.ca to sign up online and choose the Exeter branch as their home branch.
