As winter weather approaches, local school officials are reminding families what to expect when buses are cancelled or schools are closed due to bad weather.
The Avon Maitland District School Board says its main goal is to keep schools open whenever possible for students and staff who can arrive safely. Decisions about cancelling buses or closing schools are based on several factors, including road and weather conditions, bus availability, and the ability to keep schools warm and running. If a school’s access road is closed, that school will also be closed.
On bad weather days, teaching will continue whether students are in class or learning from home. Teachers understand that not every student will be able to attend or access online materials, and they will offer extra help once students return.
There are two possible situations on snow days:
If buses are cancelled but schools stay open, classes will continue as usual. Teachers will post learning activities online for students who stay home and give them time to catch up later.
If schools are closed, teachers will post simple learning activities online to help students review what they’ve already learned. These activities will not be graded since not all students will be able to access them.
The school board reminds families that when buses are cancelled but schools are open, these are not days off. Learning can still take place both in the classroom and at home.
