As winter sets in, OPP is reminding everyone to be very careful near lakes and rivers. Even if the ice looks solid, no ice is completely safe.
Early-season ice is often thin and unpredictable. Activities like snowmobiling or using motorized recreational vehicles on frozen water can be very dangerous. Falling through the ice can lead to life-threatening cold-water immersion within minutes. These accidents also put emergency responders at risk.
The OPP urges snowmobilers and anyone using motorized vehicles near ice to stay on marked trails, avoid unfamiliar areas, especially at night, check weather and trail conditions before heading out. Wear warm clothing to prevent hypothermia.Keep your cellphone fully charged. Consider using the what3words app to help rescuers find you. Never go alone; tell someone your route and return time. Avoid alcohol or drugs, which impair judgment and reduce body warmth. Carry safety gear like ice picks and throw ropes. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition, and bring a first-aid kit and survival supplies.
If someone falls through the ice, call 911 immediately. Rescue is safest when trained professionals handle it.
The OPP urges everyone to make safety a top priority this winter.
