Huron Health System says weekend walk-in clinic services at the South Huron Medical Centre will end on December 29th. The organization says the decision was difficult but necessary because of serious and ongoing staffing challenges, especially a shortage of available doctors.
The hospital spent the past year trying to recruit new physicians to help cover weekend shifts. Despite those efforts, fewer doctors are available both locally and across the country. Because of this, the hospital says it can no longer safely or reliably staff the weekend walk-in clinic. South Huron Hospital will continue to focus on its 24-hour emergency department, which remains fully staffed.
Huron Health System President and CEO Jimmy Trieu says the team understands how much the community depends on weekend care. He says the shortage of physicians left the hospital with no other choice, adding that patient safety must always come first.
People who need non-urgent medical help on weekends are encouraged to call 811 to speak with a registered nurse. They can also use the Virtual Urgent Care Program online or by phone. During the week, anyone without a family doctor can book an appointment at an Unattached Care Clinic. Anyone with an urgent or emergency medical issue should go directly to the nearest emergency department.
All other hospital services at South Huron Hospital remain the same. Huron Health System says it will continue to push for long-term solutions to help recruit and keep physicians in the region.
