Residents in Exeter, Goderich, Bluewater, and southern Huron County are being warned to prepare for very dangerous winter weather, as Environment Canada has issued an Orange Warning for snow squalls along with a Yellow Warning for strong winds.
Forecasters say intense snow squalls and near-blizzard conditions are expected to begin this morning and continue into Tuesday. An initial burst of heavy snow is expected along a cold front, bringing a quick five centimetres of snow in a short time. Temperatures will drop rapidly, which could lead to icy and slippery roads.
As the day continues, lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Huron are expected to develop. Strong northwesterly winds, with gusts between 70 and 90 kilometres per hour, will cause widespread blowing snow and very poor visibility. Total snowfall amounts could reach between 25 and 50 centimetres in some areas.
Travel conditions are expected to be extremely hazardous. Visibility may suddenly drop to near zero, some roads could become impassable, and road closures are likely. Power outages are also possible and could be widespread due to the combination of heavy snow and strong winds.
At the same time, strong winds are expected throughout the day. Wind gusts near 90 kilometres per hour may cause damage to trees, fences, roofs, and other loose objects. Gusty conditions may continue overnight, especially in areas affected by ice from earlier freezing rain.
Officials are urging residents to avoid travel if possible, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for possible disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities. While conditions will be severe, Environment Canada says the weather will gradually improve to scattered flurries by Tuesday afternoon.
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring weather alerts and forecasts and to use extreme caution if they must be out during the storm.
