January marks Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to highlighting a serious occupational risk that often develops out of sight but impacts a significant number of firefighters.
Cancer has become the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters in North America, with ongoing research showing elevated rates of certain cancers compared to the general population. These increased risks are linked to repeated exposure to smoke, toxic gases, soot, and hazardous chemicals released during fires.
While advances in protective equipment have improved safety, they cannot fully eliminate exposure to cancer-causing substances encountered on the job. The month serves as an opportunity to honour firefighters who have lost their lives, support those currently battling cancer, and raise public awareness about the long-term health risks faced by the fire service.
