Huron County Ontario Provincial Police are reminding residents that pushing snow or ice onto the road is against the law.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, it is an offence to place snow or ice on a roadway without written permission from the ministry or the authority responsible for maintaining that road. Police say this rule is in place to keep everyone safe during winter conditions.
Snow left on the road can quickly turn into ice, creating dangerous driving conditions. It can also slow down snow removal efforts, as public works crews may need to clear the same areas again. Large snowbanks can also block sightlines for drivers and pedestrians, increasing the risk of collisions.
Police are asking residents to keep all shoveled or plowed snow on their own property, such as lawns or driveways. Snow should not be pushed onto neighbouring properties without permission. Residents are also reminded to keep fire hydrants clear so emergency crews can access them quickly, and to avoid blocking curbs where garbage and recycling bins are placed for collection.
Police say traffic safety is a shared responsibility and are thanking residents for doing their part to keep roads safe this winter.
