Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning for the area as significant snow is expected throughout the day.
Forecasters say snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 centimetres are likely from this morning through tonight. Visibility may be poor at times due to heavy snow and blowing snow, especially in open and wind-exposed areas. Wind gusts could reach close to 50 kilometres an hour, making conditions worse in some locations.
The snow is being brought in by an Alberta clipper moving through the region. Snow is expected to begin this morning and continue through the day. Tonight, the snowfall may become more on and off, with steady snow changing to periods of heavier lake-effect snow. Lake-effect snow and possible snow squalls could continue into Thursday.
Travel is expected to be challenging as roads and walkways become covered with snow. Drivers are being warned that conditions could change quickly, with reduced visibility at times. Residents are encouraged to allow extra time for travel and to be prepared for difficult driving conditions.
