As the weather starts to take a turn for the better, the Municipality of Bluewater is reminding residents about the rules for using off-road vehicles (ORVs).
Under provincial law, municipalities can make rules about where ORVs can travel on roads they manage. Not all roads and vehicles are the same, so riders need to know the rules that apply in their area. Users must also follow provincial rules about licensing, age, insurance, and speed. Following these rules helps keep everyone safe.
To help riders, the Coalition for Huron Injury Prevention has created a map showing where ORVs can be used on roads in the municipality. This helps both residents and local law enforcement understand the rules.
Bluewater’s By-Law 121-2024 regulates the movement of ORVs on municipal roads. It defines different types of vehicles, including ATVs, UTVs, off-road motorcycles, and recreational off-highway vehicles. In urban areas, riders are only allowed to use ORVs on roads when travelling to or from their homes or to refuel. Riding is not allowed on municipal property such as parks, sports fields, playgrounds, cemeteries, sidewalks, or unopened roads unless special permission is given. Riders must also follow all parking rules and respect law enforcement officers.
Violating the by-law is considered an offence, and fines may apply. For example, operating an ORV on municipal property can result in a $350 fine.
The Municipality encourages all ORV users to know the rules, follow them carefully, and ride safely.
