Residents in Exeter, Goderich, Bluewater and southern Huron County are being asked to stay alert as severe thunderstorms could develop later today.
Environment Canada has issued a yellow severe thunderstorm watch, with a high level of confidence that strong storms may form.
Forecasters say the storms could bring wind gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour, hail as large as a toonie, and heavy downpours. There is also a risk of a tornado. The storms are expected to develop over Michigan or Lake Huron before moving east into the area late this afternoon or this evening.
Officials are reminding residents that lightning can be dangerous. People are urged to head indoors right away if storms approach. Emergency Management Ontario is also encouraging everyone to take cover if threatening weather develops and to stay aware of changing conditions.
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when weather conditions are right for dangerous storms to form. Residents are encouraged to keep checking forecasts and alerts, and to report severe weather if they see it.
