With Victoria Day celebrations approaching, the Municipality of South Huron is reminding residents about local fireworks rules and safety guidelines to help keep holiday celebrations safe.
Under the South Huron fireworks bylaw, fireworks can only be set off between dusk and 11 p.m. on Victoria Day and Canada Day. Officials say fireworks are not allowed on any other days of the year. Fireworks can also only be sold or given to people aged 18 and older, and sales or displays are only permitted between May 1st and July 10th.
Residents who want to report fireworks concerns or complaints are asked to contact the Ontario Provincial Police non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122.
Fire officials are encouraging people to attend organized public fireworks displays whenever possible, noting they are managed by trained professionals with proper safety measures in place.
Anyone planning to host a private or group fireworks event must first get approval from the South Huron Fire Chief. Requests must be submitted in writing and include details such as the date, location, and qualifications of the person responsible for the display. Proof of safe handling and management is also required. Applications can be made by calling 519-235-1981 or emailing firechief@southhuron.ca
Officials are also reminding residents that home fireworks displays come with risks. Property owners are responsible for any damage or injuries that may occur. Neighbours should be notified in advance, and fireworks should only be used in safe, open areas away from buildings, trees, and dry grass.
Only adults should handle fireworks, and one responsible person should supervise the display while following all safety instructions. Water should always be kept nearby, and fireworks that do not ignite should never be relit. Instead, they should be left for at least 30 minutes and then soaked in water.
Sparklers are also a concern, as they burn at extremely high temperatures and can cause serious burns. Officials warn they should never be given to young children.
After fireworks are used, residents are asked to clean up properly by soaking all materials in water before disposing of them in regular garbage. Fireworks should never be thrown into lakes or streams.
Officials say fireworks can be enjoyed safely when people follow the rules and take proper precautions.
