Ontario is introducing new rules aimed at cracking down on ticket resellers who break the law by selling event tickets above their original price.
The changes will take effect on June 10, 2026, under the Ticket Sales Act, 2017. Officials say the goal is to better protect consumers and make live events more affordable for families across the province.
Under the new measures, repeat offenders could face administrative penalties of up to $25,000, up from the current maximum of $10,000. The province will also be able to publicly identify ticketing businesses that are under enforcement action.
Government officials say the stronger penalties are meant to discourage illegal resale practices that can drive up prices and limit access to concerts and sporting events.
In addition to the new penalties, businesses that do not follow the rules can already face compliance orders or court action, with fines reaching up to $50,000 for individuals and $250,000 for corporations.
The province says details about enforcement actions will also be added to Ontario’s Consumer Beware List starting June 10th.
Officials say the changes are part of ongoing efforts to ensure fans and families have a fair chance to buy tickets at reasonable prices and enjoy live events without being taken advantage of by scalpers.
