Residents of Lambton County are being urged to take precautions as a Heat Warning has been issued for Wednesday, June 10th, through Thursday, June 11th.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says daytime temperatures are expected to reach 31°C or higher, while overnight temperatures may remain around 20°C. Humidex values could also climb to 40 or higher, creating dangerous conditions for some people.
According to Lambton Public Health, high temperatures and humidity can make it difficult for the body to cool itself, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Symptoms of heat-related illness can include dizziness, fainting, rapid breathing, vomiting, a fast heartbeat, extreme thirst, and dark-coloured urine. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should move to a cool or air-conditioned space, drink fluids, and rest. Medical attention should be sought if symptoms do not improve.
Health officials remind residents that heat stroke is a medical emergency. Anyone who becomes unconscious, confused, develops a very high body temperature, or stops sweating should receive immediate medical attention by calling 911.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, seek shade whenever possible, and check regularly on elderly neighbours, family members, and others who may be at greater risk.
Officials also remind the public never to leave children, older adults, or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a short period of time.
