Norfolk County is preparing to carry out sewer smoke testing in Port Dover and Port Rowan as part of its County-Wide Inflow and Infiltration Program.
The County has hired Civica Infrastructure Inc. to complete the work between July 6 and July 31, with testing taking place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The project is designed to identify locations where stormwater or groundwater is entering the sanitary sewer system through cracks, damaged pipes, or improper connections.
Sanitary sewers are designed to carry wastewater from homes, businesses, and industries to treatment plants. When excess rainwater or groundwater enters the system, it can reduce pipe capacity, strain wastewater treatment facilities, and increase the risk of sewer backups and basement flooding.
Smoke testing is a safe and effective way to locate these problem areas. The smoke used during testing is non-toxic and helps crews identify unwanted connections or leaks in the underground sewer network.
Residents within the testing areas have already received hand-delivered notices, and Norfolk County says regular updates will be provided throughout the project. A complete list of affected roads and areas is available on the County’s website.
