OPP is warning people about a new scam involving fake cell phone upgrade offers.
Police say scammers are pretending to work for major phone companies like Rogers, Bell, and Telus. They contact people and offer a free or low-cost phone upgrade. To process the offer, they ask for personal information.
After the new phone arrives, the scammer contacts the victim again and says the wrong phone was shipped by mistake. They tell the person to return it using a shipping label they provide. Instead of going back to the phone company, the device is sent directly to the scammer.
Police say victims can end up paying for the phone, facing extra charges, or having fraudulent activity on their account.
OPP reminds people to be careful of unexpected calls, emails, or text messages offering phone upgrades. Never give out personal information unless you have confirmed who you are dealing with. If you receive an offer, contact your phone provider directly using the official phone number on your bill or website.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted should contact their local police service and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. If personal or financial information has been shared, contact your phone provider and financial institution right away to help protect your accounts.
