OPP is reminding drivers to make safe choices this Civic Holiday long weekend.
Officers across the OPP West Region will be watching for dangerous driving behaviours, including speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, and failing to move over for emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside.
During last year’s Civic Holiday campaign, officers laid 1,425 charges, including 625 speeding tickets, 148 seatbelt offences, 10 distracted driving charges, 47 impaired driving charges, and 19 charges for failing to move over for emergency vehicles.
Police are also reminding drivers about Ontario’s Move Over law. When approaching an emergency vehicle with flashing lights stopped on the side of the road, drivers must slow down and, if it is safe to do so, move into another lane to give emergency crews more space.
The OPP says making safe decisions behind the wheel helps protect everyone on the road and can prevent tragedies during the busy holiday weekend.
