The City of Brantford and the County of Brant have agreed to pause plans for a proposed municipal boundary adjustment involving the Brantford Municipal Airport and surrounding lands.
The decision comes after both municipalities determined there is not enough time to finalize a restructuring agreement before the restricted period leading up to the municipal election begins.
Earlier this year, the City and County signed a Memorandum of Understanding with support from the Office of the Provincial Land and Development Facilitator. The plan would have moved the City-owned airport and nearby lands into Brantford’s municipal boundary, aligning ownership with municipal jurisdiction and supporting the airport’s long-term financial future.
Staff from both municipalities had been working to complete the agreement needed before submitting the restructuring proposal to Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. However, officials said there would not be enough time to complete the work and provide the public with a proper opportunity to review the plan before council decisions were required.
Despite the pause, Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis and County of Brant Mayor David Bailey said the work completed so far provides a strong foundation for future discussions about the airport and continued cooperation between the two municipalities.
As a result of the decision, the statutory public meetings that were originally scheduled for the end of July, before being postponed to August 10 in Brantford and August 12 in the County of Brant, have now been cancelled.
