Residents across the Ausable Bayfield watershed are being reminded to stay away from rivers, streams and other waterways following heavy rainfall.
Up to 70 millimetres of rain has fallen in some areas over the past 24 hours. More rain is expected, with another 10 to 50 millimetres possible. Because thunderstorms can produce very different amounts of rain from one area to another, the total rainfall is still uncertain.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority says the ground is becoming saturated, meaning there is less capacity to absorb more rain. This could lead to more runoff and rising water levels in local rivers and streams.
Major flooding is not expected at this time, but minor flooding is possible, especially in low-lying areas. Heavy rain can also cause water levels to rise quickly and without warning.
Residents are asked to stay away from waterways during and after heavy rain. Riverbanks can become slippery and unstable, and fast-moving water can be dangerous.
The watershed conditions message is in effect until noon on Saturday, August 29th, unless it is updated sooner.
