Some Canadian websites briefly displayed Lake Ontario under a different name after a recent change by Google Maps.
The issue appeared Sunday, when maps on several Canadian and Ontario websites showed the lake as “Lake America.” Google had announced a change to reflect an executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Google had said the change would only affect users in the United States, but the new name appeared on maps used by several Canadian organizations. Hydro One’s outage map, the LCBO’s store locator and a federal government housing and infrastructure map were among those affected.
Some of the websites have since said they are working to correct the issue.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is also pushing back against the move to rename the lake.
He says Lake Ontario has carried its name for more than 400 years, with the name coming from a Wendat word meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.”
While the name change applies to some U.S. federal documents and geographic services, Canadian officials continue to recognize and refer to the body of water as Lake Ontario.
