The new school year is here and drivers are being reminded to slow down and pay close attention around school buses and children.
OPP Constable Craig Soldan says drivers should expect some delays during morning and afternoon commutes as school buses return to the roads.
He says drivers need to watch for the amber warning lights on school buses, followed by the red lights and stop arm.
Passing a school bus is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act and can lead to a fine of at least 400 dollars and demerit points. If police cannot identify the driver, the vehicle owner can be charged.
Soldan says drivers should never try to pass a school bus just to save a few minutes.
He is also reminding drivers to watch for children walking, biking or using regular scooters on their way to school. Children may cross roads unexpectedly, so drivers need to stay alert, especially around parked vehicles and intersections.
As school buses return to the road, the weather also take a change. Soldan says drivers should also be extra careful in fog or other poor weather.
The message from police is simple: slow down, stay alert and give children plenty of space to get to and from school safely.
