A new organization is being created to help caregivers feel more supported and better prepared for the challenges they face.
The Caregiver Strong Institute was created by co-founders Belle Lumani and Denise Bedard. Lumani says the idea was inspired by caring for her mother before she passed away last year.
Bedard brings 45 years of experience in long-term care and research. The two say they saw a need for better support, education and resources for caregivers.
They say caregiving is becoming more important as people live longer and more families take on caregiving roles.
Bedard says caregivers give so much to others, but they also need support and care themselves.
The official launch and fundraiser for the Caregiver Strong Institute is happening September 27th in Hensall.
Lumani and Bedard say it will be a fun, family-friendly day with live music, local food vendors, games and activities for children. There will also be a pickup baseball game, and people are encouraged to come dressed in an old favourite sports jersey, cowboy boots or a cowboy hat.
Tickets are $10, with children under six getting in free. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time, but cash will also be accepted at the door.
The organization is also looking for volunteers, including people who can help with grant writing.
The founders say caregiving can affect people of all ages, including families caring for children. Their goal is to create a stronger network where caregivers can find information, support and resources, while also remembering the importance of caring for themselves.
