As part of 90.5 myFM’s 2026 Election Coverage, myFM reached out to candidates in South Huron, Bluewater, Lambton Shores and Lucan-Biddulph to hear why they believe residents should vote for them on October 26th.
Here’s what Wendy McLeod-Haggitt, running for Ward 1 in South Huron had to say.
TRANSCRIBED AUDIO:
“I am Wendy McLeod-Haggitt, candidate for Ward 1. I am running because I believe South Huron has a tremendous future ahead and I want to help make sure we move forward responsibly, thoughtfully and together. After three years on council, I have had a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing our municipality. I have seen firsthand how the decisions we make today affect our taxpayers, infrastructure, businesses, families and communities for years to come.
My focus is moving South Huron forward together with fiscal responsibility, responsible growth, strong infrastructure, support for local businesses and protecting the rural character that makes Ward 1 such a great place to call home. Most importantly, I want residents to know that their voices matter. I will continue to be accessible, approachable, and willing to listen. I bring three years of experience serving as a South Huron Councillor and I believe that experience sets me apart. Council has given me first-hand experience with municipal budgets, infrastructure, planning, development, governance, and the difficult decisions that come with balancing competing priorities. I’ve learned that good leadership is not just about having ideas. It’s about asking the right questions, understanding the facts and considering the financial impact, listening to residents and making decisions based on what is best for our community. My professional experience has also taught me the importance of organization, communication, accountability, attention to detail and treating people with respect.
I’m not starting from scratch. I understand the job. I understand the challenges and I am ready to continue working from day one. I believe our biggest challenge is managing growth while remaining financially responsible for protecting the character of our communities. Growth brings opportunities, but it also brings cost. We need to ask, can we afford it? Do we have the infrastructure to support it? Who is paying for it? And does it make sense for South Huron? We need to plan ahead for roads, bridges, water, wastewater, drainage, housing and community services while pursuing federal and provincial funding wherever possible.
I believe responsible growth and fiscal responsibility can work together. We can build for the future without losing sight of who we are today. Residents should vote for me because I bring experience, accountability and a genuine commitment to putting residents first.
I believe in responsible spending, smart growth, strong infrastructure, supporting local businesses, protecting our rural identity, and making municipal government more open and accessible. But most importantly, I believe in listening. After three years on council, I understand the responsibilities of the job and the challenges facing our municipality.
I am ready and willing to continue advocating for Ward 1 and working with Council, residents, businesses and our community partners to get things done. This is our home, this is our future. I’m Wendy McLeod-Haggitt and I am asking for your support to serve Ward 1 and moving South Huron forward together.”
