A piece of Exeter baseball history will be celebrated tomorrow as three members of the town’s 1956 championship team are honoured.
The Exeter Midget baseball team won the Ontario Baseball Association Midget C Baseball Championship in the fall of 1956 after defeating Caledonia.
The win was the first provincial baseball championship for Exeter.
Now, 70 years later, the three surviving members of that championship team will be recognized before the South Huron Panthers game on Wednesday, September 23rd.
Cy Blommaert, Jim Hennesy and Jim Russell will be honoured at Alvin Willert Field in Exeter. The ceremony will begin around 1:50 p.m., before the Panthers take on Clinton Central Huron at 2 p.m. The three former players will be escorted to home plate, where they will receive championship pennants from Mayor George Finch. They will then throw ceremonial first pitches.
Organizers are inviting the community to come out, cheer on the three former champions and help celebrate an important part of Exeter’s baseball history.
