Fall is officially here, and that means it’s almost time to clear out those piles of leaves.
The Municipality of Bluewater’s fall leaf collection gets underway October 13th and will run until November 18th in Bayfield, Brucefield, Dashwood, Hensall, Kippen, Varna and Zurich.
Collection will happen on a rolling basis, meaning residents will not have one specific pickup day. For lakeshore areas west of Highway 21, collection is scheduled for November 6.
Leaves must be placed in compostable paper bags. Plastic bags will not be accepted, and bags need to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day. Keep branches, sticks, sod, garbage and animal waste out of the bags. Residents are also asked not to rake leaves onto roads or into ditches, as this can create safety concerns and block drainage.
Weather could also cause changes to the collection schedule.
If you miss the pickup, there are other options. Leaves and brush can be dropped off for free at the Green Waste Depot on Blind Line in Zurich or Stanley Landfill on Mill Road in Varna during regular operating hours. Branches brought to the Green Waste Depot must be less than four inches in diameter.
Before you bag everything up, the Municipality suggests considering other options, like mulching leaves, composting them or using them as garden cover.
